The holes are made by rock-boring clams, whose burrows permeate the rock of the nearshore shale reefs. While geologist insist that only corals build reefs and that reefos occur only in the tropicsm biologists and fisherment know reefs as any solid structure beneath the ocean water that gives a home to encrusting organisms. Defined this way, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is rich in reefs.
