...is a song whose signature line is "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" really the best choice for tech support hold music?

EDIT: "Every word I say is true, this I promise you" is not much better for customer service. =P

If you're on the line with your ISP, you probably don't want to hear "Every Move You Make" by The Police either.

...nor indeed if you're actually on the line with the actual police, for that matter.

I ALWAYS listen to lyrics. If a song catches my attention, and listening closely isn't enough to decipher them, first thing I do is hunt for a lyrics sheet.

I often find myself screaming at the hold music "If my call really WAS important to you, you'd ANSWER YOUR ******* TELEPHONE!"
