The Hoard Potato explains it all!
In a recent post and its associated comments, thebitterguy complained:

... Canada doesn't fucking EXIST in the DCU ... Marvel at least had a team up here. DC didn't even give us a member of the Global Guardians.

Your Obedient Serpent intuited the obvious: since Shuster modeled Metropolis on Toronto, DCU Canada was obviously annexed by the DCU U.S. at some point in the 19th Century.

This explains where they put all those extra cities; they took all those funny Canadian names and replaced them with more prosaic, descriptive ones. "What the heck's a 'Vancouver'?" "It's a city on the coast." "Can't we just call it 'Coast City', then?"

It's not that DC doesn't have any Canadian heroes; it's that MOST of their heroes are Canadian!

Weren't the Metropolis scenes in Superman III shot in Toronto?

Alas, as appropriate as that would have been, it seems it was filmed in Calgary, instead.

I've never seen III or IV.

I've never seen III or IV.

Don't.

I've heard that. Repeatedly.

Well, I knew it was up there somewhere. I read at the time that they'd shot the Kansas sequences there, and were contemplating the expense of shooting Metropolis exteriors in New York and changed their minds.

You just broke my brain. Calgary is not "up there somewhere" with Toronto. It's a four-day drive and the polar opposite political stance away.

Sorry.

Hey, it's all East of I-5.

I was kind of joking, but really, it's like saying Chicago and L.A. are the same because they're both in the States.

I would have to say that, given the general politeness of its most famous citizens, Fawcett City would have to be in Canada. (Although my sources posit that it's in Wisconsin.)

So, he's saying having Alpha Flight is preferable to just being ignored? I don't know if that necessarily follows, logic wise. ;)

At least one of the commenters in TBG's post seems to agree.
