Writer's Block: Heroes and villains
Who was your favorite childhood superhero, and why?

Who was your favorite childhood superhero, and why?

Green Lantern.

  • The Ring That Does Anything You Can Imagine.
  • Being part of an interstellar community dedicated to saving lives, preventing disasters, helping people, and, oh, yes, maybe fighting crime here and there.
  • This:

... oh, and even though Hal was the Main Green Lantern throughout my '60s and '70s childhood, he was never my favorite Lantern. I encountered John Stewart early on, and Alan Scott later, and, of course, all of the myriad alien GLs.

"The one True Green Lantern" so beloved of the fanboys is my least favorite ringslinger.

I have to admit, I've -never- been a fan of Hal. He was always too much of the 'good boy', and since I was first introduced to Green Lantern with Kyle, he's been my favorite of the Earth corps. Of late, Salaak, Isamot Kol, and, to a much larger degree, most of the Sinestro Corps (the big-foreheaded man himself, too) are big faves of mine. Also, who can't help but love Larfleeze? :>

Fun Fact: The Green Lanterns' Oath was written by Alfred Bester.

Oh, as much as I'd love to believe that one of my favorite novelists contributed one of my favorite things about one of my favorite characters, Bester himself said otherwise.

Huh. I had a conversation with a veteran employee of DC and SMOF at ArmadilloCon one year about the 60s and 70s era of DC, and he assured me that that was the case. Still, he may have not actually been either, or he may have misremembered things. I can't remember his name, so I can't verify it either. Oh well.
